Dear Families of Holy Name,

A Merry Christmas to all of you.

I was corrected this week and out of humility, I would like to share it with you. Last week, I referred to the Blessed Mother as an unwed mother. It is true that she was a virgin and had no relations. She was betrothed to Joseph and thus technically married. That is why Joseph could divorce her quietly. There cannot be a divorce without a marriage. So she was married, but she was not taken into Joseph’s home.

I was reflecting on Mary this week and her glorious “yes” to God. She did not know the full extent, but God used her yes to literally bring salvation to the world through His Son Jesus Christ. Her soul magnified the Lord as our 4th graders proclaimed at convocation this week. There is and was a profound cooperation between God and Mary.

We all have an invitation to bring Jesus into our lives. You are here at Holy Name because you want something more. Jesus is the main ingredient. I pray that this Christmas you are open to receiving the amazing gift Jesus offers us. The more we surrender and invite Him in, the more we are transformed. Mary surrendered and through that surrender, the world was forever changed. We have the capacity to impact our world through surrender. We cannot give what we do not have. What will our profound cooperation be with God?

As you go to Mass this Sunday and on Christmas, I invite you to open your heart and simply receive the grace. I encourage you to reflect on one of my favorite Christmas songs, “O come all ye faithful”. The line, “O come let us adore Him…” is so powerfully simple. We can adore and say yes.

May the peace and joy of Christmas be with you.
