Dear Families of Holy Name,

Our hope each and every day is that we grow closer to Jesus. Our mission as a Catholic school in the Diocese of Marquette is to do just that while using the tools of classical education. I have been so impressed with the growth of our students. Our scores are nearly double that of our public school neighbors. Our staff is embracing Bishop John Doerfler’s call to create wonder and teach with the good, true, and beautiful in mind. Our students are building strong minds because they are being challenged to think, assess, evaluate and connect. Our small school is well represented again with four students finishing in the top 10 of Escanaba Public—including valedictorian. It is my sincere hope that more students will take advantage of our Holy Name High School so we can maximize their potential. Holy Name offers a rich curriculum that is nationally recognized. It is one of the fastest growing networks of schools in the country. I frequently hear that Holy Name students are far ahead of their classmates in the public school. Holy Name is not seeking to be an elitist school. We are seeking disciples that are getting every opportunity to grow as fully alive persons that God intended us to be.

I had the opportunity to hear from our seniors about their experience at the Holy Name High School – a Chesterton Academy on Thursday evening. We held a dinner with donors so our students could share a toast or share part of their journey. I was so impressed with the maturity of the comments. I heard messages of service, discipleship, wisdom from GK Chesterton, and a genuine, sincere joy. It was a beautiful evening. The scholarship committee was able to distribute over $31,000 to these students! We will announce the winners soon. The $31,000 is an every year gift for our seniors. It will help with their next steps whether the students take up the trades or go to a college. Thank you so much to our donors who make that amazing annual gift a reality.

Track season has been in full swing. I have been present at many of the track meets and I love to see their hard work. Their bodies have been training, but the students of Holy Name are showing mental toughness as well. I am so proud of them. There are multiple students with new school records and even some 8th graders were able to compete in the High School regionals. I am happy to say we have many students from grade 8-12 that are participating in the UP state finals in Kingsford. A well rounded person takes care of their body and I see good habits being formed. Thank you to the coaches who are able to help our athletes become the best they can be.

The students performed well at the music concert on Monday. I am proud of their efforts. Thank you Dr. LaCosse for your dedication to our students.

St. Vincent de Paul society called Holy Name this week in need of help. It was a time sensitive project. I asked our high schoolers if they could help at the end of the day. I was impressed that our students were so willing on such short notice. It was another example of our students living a life of virtue.

We have an opportunity to help our parishes with the Honduras mission. Please see the note below from Amber Hartman.

JMJ

Hola Holy Name Families! As you may know earlier this year our students donated the proceeds from Entrepreneur Day to support the mission work of the Sirvientes De Cristo in Honduras. Volunteers will be returning to the La Granja barrio of La Paz, Honduras this summer. Holy Name has another exciting opportunity to put faith into action and bless the children of the barrio by donating supplies for the Bible Fiesta. The Sirvientes De Cristo are seeking donations of new, unopened washable markers, colorful tissue paper, Modge Podge, and foam brushes. A donation bin will be placed in front of the chapel starting Monday, May 19th through the end of the school year. Next fall volunteers will share a presentation with the students so they may begin to learn more about how their efforts are blessing our brothers and sisters in Christ in Honduras.

Finally, there are many rumors swirling around staffing for next year. We are in the process of issuing contracts to teachers. We will share out the full staffing plan as we work through our process. Enrollment drives nearly everything. I encourage you to reach out to your friends, neighbors, and fellow countrymen. Please share the message that Holy Name Catholic School is a safe place for children to grow as a disciple of Jesus. We challenge our students to reach their fullest potential academically and we simultaneously give opportunities for them to listen to God’s calling. It is in listening to God’s call that we will find true joy and peace.

Many blessings to you all. Have a great time at the Mother/Son event and the High School Formal on Saturday. Thank you to Home and School and the Student Life Committees for making these great events possible.

Peace and joy,
Nathan Vande Hey -Principal

Message from the Principal

Dear Families of Holy Name,

A big congratulations to our 8th grade girls on their basketball conference championship last night in Carney.  They came together as a team to win it.  We are so proud of their efforts.  A huge thank you to coaches Tony Derkos and Lori Jurek.  Yes the girls learned the skills of basketball, but they also had opportunities to grow in virtue.  I hope they can continue that success into our high school sports program.  In the end, we become better people because we do hard things together— not just relying on ourselves.

The Tony Melendez concert moved hearts here at Holy Name on Tuesday.  It was a powerful witness and our students shared how much it impacted them.  From his brother Jose’s testimony of wanting to essentially disown Tony to the bullying Tony himself endured.  Recognizing that your identity is not found in what you do or are capable of, but that you are a child of our Heavenly Father.  He loves and delights in us.  Tony’s struggles and determination highlighted for our students that we can do hard things and God will not only get us through them, but His love will shine through us.  One powerful moment was Tony singing a Hail Mary and asking students to share prayer requests up at a microphone.  We have families that need our prayers.   My heart goes out to them.  Please lift up our school families in your daily prayers.

This week I witnessed amazing lessons in multiple different grades.  I would like to share that the teachers are embracing the classical pedagogy that not only sets Holy Name apart, but it is helping our students effectively learn.  I saw first hand how our teachers guide them to discovery and wonder.  I do not wish to embarrass one particular teacher, but let me say that I wish I had it on video to share with anyone looking to teach classically.  It was a model lesson.  The students engaged at a high level and responded in truly thoughtful and insightful ways.

Looking ahead, we have the All Saints Day event  on November 1.  It is a holy day of obligation and we hope you will find a Mass time that works for you and your family and then join us for the celebration.

The Holy Name High School Cross Country team is competing in the UP Finals tomorrow in Munising.  Say a prayer that they compete well and they will honor God with their performance.

The high school also received additional equipment for the woodworking program.  A big thank you goes out to the donors.  It will enhance the safety, but also the quality for our students’ experience.

One last celebration to note.  After the Tony Melendez concert a parent commented that she wished we could do more praise and worship at school.  I am happy to report that during our daily convocation that our 4th and 5th graders lead us in a praise song each day.  There are now some 6th graders joining as well.  Additionally, Deacon Bob exposed the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel.  Our students have an opportunity to praise and adore our Lord on a weekly basis.  Adoration gives quiet time to listen to our Lord and His vocation for us.  It is hard to listen when we are always talking.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Peace and joy,

Message from the Principal – 10/10/2024

Oct 10, 2024

Dear Families of Holy Name,

This has been a full week. I was able to attend the Pregnancy Services banquet and the Life Chain event along the highway. It is such an important mission to not only speak for the babies, but also to support women and families in need. Holy Name was well represented at both events.

It has been a fun week at Holy Name with the homecoming activities. A big thank you to Tony Derkos for the outstanding pep rally. The twins’ day was phenomenal. So creative. I was so impressed with the classes getting together and coming up with fun ideas. I hope we can post some of them on facebook soon.

The 8th grade neon dance was super creative and fun. A big shout out to our girls basketball teams. They have had a great season. First off, I saw them working together and having fun. I also saw great defense, hustle, jump balls, nice jump shots and layups. The 8th grade closes out their season with a tourney next week. They can wear their jerseys during school for game
day.

Reminder: The Homecoming Dance for 6th, 7th & 8th Graders is Friday, October 11th from 7pm to 9pm in the Multipurpose Room.

You may have noticed that our staff is delving more deeply into classical pedagogy. Picture study presents a beautiful work of art and students have an opportunity to take time to explore, learn and appreciate the beauty. Inevitably, a student begins to understand the story in the painting. I heard from several classes how well this is going. One teacher used a painting of St. Peter getting the keys from Jesus. The students intuitively guessed quickly because of the integrated experience here at Holy Name. For the next painting, the teacher split the painting into 3 different sections. The students began to inquire and try to put the pieces of this puzzle together. It created a tremendous sense of wonder. As all the pieces were revealed, the students gained a fuller understanding. This process solidifies the memory and it becomes a bedrock foundation for new learning.

I would like to go more in depth regarding narration in a later edition of the weekly Crusader. I would just like to share that one teacher has been impressed with the long term remembering of concepts and details taught since the beginning of the year. She is seeing tangible changes in her students’ skills using narration. That is an expected outcome and is very encouraging.

This week the fourth grade went on a field trip and toured a mine and they experienced the rich history of this region. Ask your child what they learned. If their answer is too short, ask them to tell you more. You will solidify that experience for them.

The Holy Name High School had the opportunity to hear a powerful testimony from one of our St. Anne’s parishioners. It was a witness to the power of the Holy Name of Jesus. Ask them about it. As we wrap up homecoming week, we will continue with a fun and inspiring concert next Tuesday. We have the privilege of hearing Tony Melendez at Holy Name at 1:30pm. You are welcome to attend. Tony was born without arms and performs by playing guitar with his feet. Tony performed for the late great St. Pope John Paul II. Tony brings great energy and hope. He promotes the dignity of each and every one of us as children of our Heavenly Father.

I hope to see you all at the show. Have a blessed rest of your week.

Peace and Joy,

Nathan Vande Hey
